Art And Money

Societies define themselves through culture. This means societies thrive through culture and find it necessary and good. Kunst ist gut, but creates much work - and, one could add, art needs many people to make it work. Many artists lack the expertise, time or energy to present their works adequately to the public.

They forego practical and economic considerations, and concentrate, rightly so, on the job they are good at - as visual artists. With reason, the visual artist tries to avoid any concerns as to whether he will be able to publish his art and find a ready market for it, he even avoids the vital question of whether he will be able to earn his own living by it.

Numerous works of art, most of all conceptual art and art in public spaces, do not sell well and therefore need special financing and promotion, which the artist himself
in most of the cases cannot provide. This is why intermediary help between artists and society is essential, otherwise this kind of art could not exist.

This consideration led us to found the association Kunst ist gut e.V.

Recent studies in art and art theory have documented the relationship between art and its financing, e. g.:
Kunstforum International, Vol. 149,
Das Schicksal des Geldes, 2000.

We particularly refer to Walter Grasskamp's "Kunst und Geld" in which the present situation of public and private support in Germany (Schlagworte: public-private partnership, sponsoring, corporate collecting) under the term "aesthetic syndrome" is critically analyzed:
Walter Grasskamp, Kunst und Geld.
Szenen einer Mischehe, München 1998.

Kunst ist gut e.V. is co-publisher of "Über Kant und Kunst", where the part of the artist in society is reflected in sociologic and philosophic contributions:
Roland Kreuzer (ed.), Über Kant und Kunst.
Beiträge zum weltfragen Symposion, Berlin 2002.
